John Maddocks (reeds) Peter Wilkinson (t) Tony Farr (tr) Chris Satterley (p) Peter McCurrie (b, sousa) Dave Broomfield (bjo, g) Brian Barker (d)
Undoubtedly the premier New Orleans-style band in this part of the world, the Maddocks band is widely appreciated throughout Britain. John is one of the very best clarinetists in the style. He’s been a popular soloist/guest at many festivals and with many bands throughout the UK
John had previously enjoyed success with The Black Bottom Stompers a band which he formed whilst in London and which still exists today.
The Jazzmen have their own sound brought about by the unique style of John’s clarinet playing. John was originally inspired by the fine clarinettist Johnny Dodds, but John is his own man and encompasses influences from all over the traditional jazz spectrum.
Personnel changes have been few over the years and this helps to give the band its cohesiveness. The band is also well known for its drive and the inclusion of some seldom heard tunes in the repertoire along with some fine arrangements from Peter Wilkinson, the band’s trumpet player. The band continues to be popular for all kinds of functions throughout the UK including most of the major jazz venues and festivals.
