Dave Brennan’s Jubilee Jazz Band

A Special Note from Dave Brennan

Wil Robinson, who has been playing for us on our local jobs for some years is a youngish trumpet player of great vitality & has a very wide repertoire which we will use to advantage at Swanage. He is also a very stylish vocalist. He joins our festival band following the recent retirement of Vic Bevan. In March 2016 we celebrate the band’s 55 years under my name. ( We changed the name from The San Jacinto Jazzmen to Dave Brennan’s Jazzband in March 1961).”

Over the years the Brennan Jazz band has become an institution. The core of the band has been together since 1961 under Dave’s leadership and has appeared many times in at European venues and Festivals.

For many years popular at a number of top UK jazz festivals, the band was the backbone of the Bude Festival in its first few years, and has played every year since its inception at Swanage, regularly appearing also at Upton-on-Severn and Marsden Festivals.

Over the years, many jazz celebrities have appeared or toured with the band. These include USA musicians Wingy Manone, Alton Purnell, Louis Nelson, Kid Thomas, Benny Waters, Herb Hall, Wallace Davenport, Al Casey, Billy Butterfield, Thomas Jefferson, Butch Thompson, Cousin Joe, Kid Sheik, John Handy, Barry Martyn, Freddie Kohlman, Jim Beatty, Don McDonald & Gene “Mighty Flea” Connors. UK notables appearing with the band include Humphrey Lyttelton, Pat Halcox, Ken Colyer, Roy Williams, John Barnes, John Crocker, Ian Wheeler & Sonny Morris. Recordings started in 1971 & since then the band has made several albums, CDs & cassettes. The latest CD “Mardi Gras in New Orleans” was recorded live at their regular Wednesday night jazz club at the ‘Three Horse Shoes’, Wickersley, near Rotherham in South Yorkshire, which has remained a popular venue since 1993. A further recording on P.E.K. Records is scheduled for release early in 2005.
Dave’s involvement in jazz is wider, leading various New Orleans Parade Bands, notably the ‘Jubilee’ & ‘Heritage’. He has recorded regularly with other bands & has had his own personal discography published in Holland. For 17 years he was a member of the Chris Blount Band, with which he recorded & toured extensively. In 1997 he toured Europe with the Anglo-American “International Jazzband”. Dave & Pat Hawes were the only UK representatives in the band.

His long & varied contribution to the promotion of jazz has earned him an entry in ‘The International Who’s Who in Music’. Dave also leads his own skiffle group when the occasion is appropriate. He has a large repertoire of songs mainly favouring those of Woody Guthrie & Leadbelly.
